Acadia Herbals
About the Ingredients
Lye: Lye is sodium
hydroxide to the chemist and
is an essential part in the
soap-making process. In the
history of soap, lye was
made by leaching water
through wood ashes to make
an alkaline mixture. As can
be imagined, this type of
soap was very harsh. It
wasn’t until the 1700s that
clean sodium hydroxide was
produced by Nicholas Le
Blanc. With today's
technology, soap makers
can create mild, long lasting
soap that readily lathers.
Water : Distilled water is
used to dissolve the lye
before mixing with the fats
and oils. Mixing the solid lye
with the oils would not allow
sufficient contact with each
fat molecule for a complete
reaction.
Olive Oil: Most vegetable-
based soaps will include a
large percentage of olive oil
because it works well as a
moisturizer. It has the ability
to attract moisture and hold
it tightly to the skin (thereby
preventing dry skin). Unlike
other oils, it is not greasy
and still allows the skin to
breathe. Olive oil is
considered very safe for
baby skin and anyone with
sensitive skin. It does not
lather very quickly but it
adds to the soap’s cleaning
ability.
Coconut Oil: Coconut oil is
used by many soapmakers
because of its lathering and
moisturizing properties. It is
derived from the dried meat
of the coconut (copra).
Coconut oil is a saturated
oil, which means it does not
spoil quickly (as tallow soaps
can). It is included in most
recipes to make a hard soap
that lathers quickly (even in
cold salt water).
Palm Oil: Palm oil is made
from the pulpy fruit of the oil
palm (same species but
different variety than the
coconut palm). Palm oil has
many of the same properties
of tallow, and soap makers
who do not want animal
products in their soaps
substitute palm.
Essential Oils: Essential oils
are extracted from plants by
steam distillation or
expression and used for
their scent and therapeutic
properties.
Organic Herbs: Some of our
herbal soaps include ground
herbs and spices. They
offer variations in color and
texture of a soap.
What NatureNate's
Herbal Soaps won't
contain:
Animal Products: Our
soaps are 100% vegan.
We do not use tallow
(rendered fat) in our soaps,
only pure vegetable oils.
Be sure to read your soap
labels: tallow or sodium
tallowate is animal based.
Fragrance Oils: Our soaps
are scented with 100% pure
essential oils. Fragrance
oils are not tolerated well by
those with sensitive skin
and they do not offer the
same therapeutic effects as
essential oils.
Detergents, preservatives
or skin conditioners: Our
soap is 100% pure soap.
Nothing but naturally-made
goodness.
